A half truth is a full lie
Gary Glynn, chairman of Alcoholics Anonymous general Service Board, Inc., New York reported wrongly:
1. There was correspondence, but not about an intention of Matthew to "publish his own translation of the Big Book".
2. He "went ahead and published his book anyway" in 1995, but it was not the Big Book of "Alcoholics Anonymous".
This correspondence was started by Matthew because of his intention to publish a German edition of "Avec les Alcooliques Anonymes" by Joseph Kessel of the 1960 Editions Gallimard - Paris. This book contains two stories from the Big Book. Gary is obviouisly confusing "Avec les Alcooliques Anonymes" with the Big Book "Alcoholics Anonymous" and thus raising wrong allegations of copyright infringement.
To make it crystal clear: This is the Big Book "Alcoholics Anonymous"

A totally different book, "Avec les Alcooliques Anonymes" by Joseph Kessel, was the reason for said extended correspondence with AAWS

Matthew thought it was merely a formal act to obtain permission from AAWS to reprint translated Steps, Traditions and stories.
But AAWS refused such permission and Mattew eventually discovered he did not need their permission at all,
because the Big Book including stories, steps and traditions is public domain and AAWS Inc. is not the owner of copyrights.
There was no copyright infringment. The copyrights were correctly licensed.
