CHECK YOUR SOURCES
Someone has written a poem that talks about the problem of
using a spell-checking program on a computer. The first stanza
says:
I have a spelling checker
I disk covered for my PC
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot see.
The words are spelled correctly, but they aren't the right
words to convey the message of the writer. It's proof positive
that if you're looking to the wrong source for correctness, then
you aren't right.
It's like that with matters of recovery. It is possible to
trust the wrong source of information about the Twelve Steps. For
instance, there are people who teach that recovery depends on
keeping rituals, going to meetings, calling a sponsor, or going to
treatment. But they are wrong. So where can we go for the truth?
We need a tried and tested source. That source in the book
Alcoholics Anonymous (the Big Book).
There are so many sources of information today, it's easy to
pick the wrong one. Be sure you carefully check out what you hear
and read about recovery and staying sober. The Big Book is the
only source of what is true and right on this subject.
The Big Book is a gift from God,
A lamp of experience and direction;
It shows us how to search our heart and mind,
And tells us what is right.
LIKE A COMPASS, THE BIG BOOK ALWAYS POINTS YOU
IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
